History

Brig Bay is a small community that has an interesting history and an intriguing cemetery as a result of early settlers. The community was named for the French fishing ships that used the harbour of Brig Bay as port. These square rigged sailing ships had two masts and were commonly known as "brigs", thus the name "Brig Bay".

The first known settler of Brig Bay was a French man named Louis Garreau. Louis was born in St. Malo, France, and later lived in Newfoundland for 49 years. His headstone can be seen in a French cemetery in Brig Bay. Louis Garreau died March 12, 1905 at the age of 72.
