History

Hawke's Bay is historically a logging town. The Tourist Chalet is on the highway, near the entrance to the Torrent River Nature Park. The Park has fully serviced trailer sites and a dumping station. It is the starting point of Hogan's Trail, a three kilometre hike to the Salmon Ladder on Torrent River, where Atlantic Salmon can be seen heading upriver to spawn. Both Torrent River and Big East River, just a short drive north, are licensed salmon rivers. Miles of inland roads link countless lakes and ponds, where anglers challenge the large speckled brook trout, well known in this region. A large community park overlooks the bay, just off the highway. Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to this area.
