History
Pigeon Cove is a small fishing community in St. Barbe Bay, on the Great Northern Peninsula. In 1891 one family lived there, and ten years later only a widow, an elderly man and two young girls were recorded there. According to family tradition, Zephaniah and Elizabeth Applin, at the encouragement of an elderly relative who was the Cove's only resident, moved to Pigeon Cove from nearby Forrester's Point with their young family in about 1920. The Applin family fished for herring and lobster, and operated a small lobster factory. They relied on nearby communities for such services as schools and stores. The population was only 17 in 1935, and was fewer than 30 as late as 1971. At about that time, with local roads somewhat improved, several families moved from Current Island to Forrester's Point and built homes along the road to Pigeon Cove. Family names found at Pigeon Cove today include Applin, Dredge, Gibbons, and Williams, the latter of the three formerly family names of Current Island.
