History
Shoal Cove West is a fishing community on the Northern Peninsula, on the southwest side of St. Margaret's Bay. The first known settlers to Shoal Cove West were relatives of George Coombs, a fisherman who settled Black Duck Cove. Shoal Cove West did not attract much settlement until the late eighteenth century. This was due to the fact that the community was not as good of a fishing station as the nearby St. John Islands. The community soon grew and in 1911, when it first appeared in the census, the population was 44. The residents of the community fished both salmon and cod. They also hunted, trapped, and worked in the woods in the winter time.
